STAR NURSERIES, SERIES 1 (2021)
Star Nurseries series 1 - 3 continue my exploration of imaginary deep space, an investigation that began in 2020 with the discovery of the Sidewalk Galaxy while walking on 24th Avenue in San Francisco. When viewed as a grid, each set of 25 monotypes represents a magnified version of a 3” x 4” area deep within the original Galaxy image.
For me, they evoke Hubble Space Telescope photographs that capture vast molecular clouds of nascent stars, blown by cosmic winds generated by ultraviolet radiation that make the stellar dust to glow with intense color.
Series 1 images are hand drawn trace monotypes. Series 2 are reverse trace monotypes, run through a relief press. Series 3 are ghost prints over which I’ve drawn the original Sidewalk Galaxy pattern.
